Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
