Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
